Mogollon Rim/South Mountain Runs
Total Distance: 8.9 m

Total Miles: 239.00 m

Elevation Gain: 3643 ft
I have a love, hate relationship with the state of Arizona. I find it hard to believe sometimes that I decided on the desert as the place I hang my hat. Reason being, there are those days where the heat, the death (of most living things in the low desert), and the landscape of my desert home just eat away at my motivation to do mostly anything. However, I do find myself some days coming to a truce with my dry, deserted friend and agreeing that when you can look past "green" as being the epitome of beauty; ie green pastures, trees, lawns, forests, etc. then you can realize that Arizona has it's perks and it's tiny little pleasures that it call's it's own.
After a routine run atop South Mountain on Pyramid trail for a measly few miles in the 100+ degree heat, I finally made the long awaited trek up to the Mogollon Rim's Highline Trail for a relatively short but grueling 6 mile run today. I knew I would enjoy the run considering it is both scenic and more importantly at 5000+ altitude. I was not let down. The trail which was easy to access, lead immediately through an open acreage of ponderosa pine's with little shade, letting the 85 degree weather seem a little hotter than normal. Then immediately came the ascent. I knew from the trail map that it would have a fair share of vert right from the get go and even though I held strong for the first 1.25 miles the Rim proceeded to chew me up like a chunk of jerky. I had hydrated myself plenty and got in enough calories I felt to hold me over but over the course of a little under 3 miles up this Rim the vert/elevation just took its toll. However, I do feel like I held my own especially on some of the tough climbs as I just concentrated on the perks of finally getting to the top and taking in the views. I ran most of the tough climbs with a good groove and only really hit rock bottom on a few of the initial climbs.
Now, as some of you may know, this is the same route that the Zane Grey 50 ultra-marathon is run on and I took solace in the fact that I knew that no more than 90 days or so prior Geoff Roes floated through those same trails, breathing in the same views on the way to his strong victory at the ZG50. So in short, it was an amazing experience and an amazing trail.
All in all the run was super awesome and one that I will stroll down again, maybe with a bib on someday?

Highline Trail/Zane Grey Course Run
So I think I was able to wipe my slate clean of chores for the weekend and free myself up for a short drive up northeast of Phoenix on Sunday to what we here in the valley of the sun call "Rim Country" for a much delayed run on the Highline Trailhead, east of Payson. Some may know the area or trailhead as the starting point of the Zane Grey 50 Miler which is run the 4th week of April, zig zagging across the Mogollon Rim in one of the toughest 50 milers in the country.
Needless to say I am stoked for the trip and ensuing run. I will try to get some snapshots of the course/trails to post shortly after.
Off to sleep, dreaming of packed, shaded singletrack and flowing, bubbling streams.

Total Elevation Gain:
This past week showed no signs of cooling down at any point. The low for the week was 106 degrees so my endeavors were forced indoors once again and that partnered with a busy work schedule has seen me only manage 2 days on the treadmill over the past week. Thankfully though the 2 runs were successful in terms of incline running. I was able to maintain both runs at a little over 3 miles each and with significant inclines for the duration of each run. I am happy my endurance going uphill, I just need to find the right time to start making longer runs a staple on the weekends. No excuses. I am looking at maybe going up north to the Mogollon Rim this weekend for a 8 mile run along Christopher Creek. The elevation is about 6500 feet so I should know how my fitness has come along by completing this run since a large portion is on a steady incline. On another note, my nutrition has improved a bit and I think I can feel it in my running. I am noticing that my recovery after these longer uphill runs is progressing to the point that I think I can run alot longer and even at a higher incline with little stress on my muscles, knees, etc.
That is all for now. Hope y'all enjoyed my little piece of ear candy.

The last week and a half has been pretty unspectacular. I had planned on reintroducing myself to the alpine forests of Flagstaff this past weekend with the hopes of getting in atleast one longer run either before or after my friend Rob and I hiked Humphrey's Peak, the highest peak in the state. This was not to be. I had packed all my running gear and headed north with anticipation of the hike and the impending run. Upon arrival we found that Weatherford Trail, the main trail to the summit, was closed due to logging somewhere up along the first ridge so we had to head down to Humphrey's Trail to make our connection to Weatherford, then to the top. It was a hot day, about 85 degrees or so, so I knew that that would take a little extra effort on both our parts to make it in one piece to the summit. I realized soon after we had started that Rob was not going to make it to the top this day. He was complaining of a headache and further up started to cramp up so I knew that this was going to take a little longer than expected. We made it to the first saddle which lies about 400 feet from the summit in good time but I knew that it would take a miracle to coax Rob into making it that last 400 feet which I knew he was capable of.
In summarizing the day, Rob said "No Mas", around the 12,500 feet mark and I proceeded to tell him to stay put and I would be back down in a jiffy and I darted up the rugged talus field hopping, zig zagging to and from. After reaching the top I took in the views and decided to get back asap. No more than 15 steps from the summit I stepped off of a rock and turned my ankle in the loose volcanic rock bed that covers the summit. At first I did not think it was a bad sprain, which in hindsight is was not, but as I tightened my shoe and put on my game face for Rob I realized that I would have to hop on one leg for the next 4.5 miles back down to the parking lot. Not cool.
I will spare you the long, gory details of agony, etc. and just say that it was a long day. So to make a long story short, no long awaited Flagstaff trail run ensued. So, after a week of no running or physical activity at all for that matter I was able to make it out to South Mountain for a shorter heat drenched jaunt on Pyramid Trail in the center of the park. It was hot, I was out of water, and I did not have the mental toughness to push through a medium length run so I called it a day after just 3.2 miles albeit with a decent amount of uphill.
I am looking forward to the remainder of the summer though.

I have been pretty off and on with my consistency in regards to running the past few weeks. I don't really have any good excuses since the weather has actually cooled off a bit and I have actually had some spare time, not a ton, to hit the trails. I think I am just waiting for that one good chance to get a longer, more meaningful run in and then I think I will be back on track mentally to start putting in more time. We will see, right?
I was able to get a few runs in on the dirt though including a nice few miles with my older brother Sean at Dreamy Draw Park within the Phoenix Mountain Preserve and another morning out in San Tan Regional Park in Queen Creek. My run at Dreamy Draw was supposed to emulate the run I did with Anton Krupicka back in June. Unfortunately though I was not able to pick up Anton's Trail Minimus footprints and we strayed from that route over the course of the run but all in all had a great early evening run along the flowing ridges that shoot up from the park surface. In reality, I do like the Phoenix Mountains, atleast what I have seen of them, and hope to get more time in on them this year because of their gradual hills, and sprawling, open valleys. They are a treat.
I was also able to make it out to my buddy Rob's neck of the woods for a run in the San Tan Mountains. I had never been into the park so I was a little green in the gills as I left the truck early in the a.m. I had told Rob that if I had not phoned him within a 4 hour time window then for him to come looking for me. My goal was for 10-12 miles, a lofty one huh? I wanted to see where I was in regards to the run that I had planned in Navajo country in September so I needed to try and get in a longer run on the trails to test my endurance. I think I am clinging to a thread to be honest. I had not planned well enough since I had forgotten to bring a couple of GU gels along with me, so I basically was planning on running for 2+ hours with no calories to hold me over. I knew I would be in for a long morning early on when I came through a clearing and realized that the next portion of the trail would be in a deep sand wash. This next mile took alot of energy and leg strength, and that combined with my lack of calories pretty much set the tone for the remainder of the run. I was able to push myself along but I found myself struggling with the full CamelBak strapped to my back and the combined heat/energy lul. The trail proved to be so-so, with the majority of it just slow rolling trails that contained no sign of life. After a sluggish 7 mile trek I collapsed on the bench in the parking lot in the 99 degree heat, which felt a heck of a lot hotter, and eventually chit chatted with a nice young park ranger before hitching a ride with Rob back to the bustling city, cooking in the distance.
i feel like my attraction to the mountains has somewhat hampered my ability to run consistently since I now primarily only run on that surface. I have noticed that the mere thought of running the roads makes me nauseous. Though, in the long run I think it will be the better alternative considering I have been able to maintain a honest love for running since I made the transition of road to trail running. My goal this week is to get in 2 mountain runs, with a long 2 hour run, and maybe one long treadmill run at incline. I am also venturing to the only true alpine zone in Arizona this weekend to conquer Humphrey's Peak once more, Flagstaff. Wish me luck.

My running life has seemed to gain a little steam over the last few weeks and for this I am very grateful. I have had the opportunity to venture to the trails three times now over the 2 weeks and have had the luxury of finally finding some real elevation gain that is accompanied with vivid scenery and believe it or not even some shade. I finally made my way out to the center of the Superstition Wilderness area, in particular the Peralta Trailhead, and was able to carve out a couple of nice little routes that have left me both in awe of the raw beauty and in pain because of the sheer vertical gain of the treacherous routes that knife like a backbone through the gut of the wilderness. I will post pictures here soon as well as post a more vivid account of the area, the creatures, and the overall experience of the Superstition Mountains. My next post may be after some time considering I will be in Oregon over the next few weeks. Luego with love.

Recent Running Escapades
Daily Distance: 9.0 m
Time: 1:29.00
Location: Dreamy Draw Park Trails, Treadmill, South Mountain Park
Total Miles: 171.00 m
Total Time: 26:10
It has been hard to not be super motivated to hit the trails since last Saturdays trail run with Tony Krupicka. It was an experience in itself to get to share a trail with someone who truly inspires me so I just wanted to use that motivation to get back on the trails and follow the example that he re-instilled in my head.
I followed up the trail run with Tony and a couple of miles on the treadmill with a 4 mile inclined run at South Mountain Park. I had originally intended on running a 6 mile loop but after a few miles of intense winds followed by rain and lightning I decided against the extra few miles and descended the crest in the crisp late spring air and avoided the lightning bolts whom watched tucked behind the clouds, mouths salivating. I was a little winded since I hadn't run any uphill stretches like that since the Cave Creek run but all in all it was a decent run that left me satisfied. Hopefully I will get in a long run this weekend.

Trail Run W/Anton Krupicka At Dreamy Draw Park
So, after picking up my race packet a few weeks back for the Cave Creek Trail Run at The Runner's Den in Phoenix, I notice on my departure a display for New Balance's new minimalist line of footwear. After checking out the setup I realize through a flier that Anton Krupicka will be in Phoenix on May 14 for a trail run at Dreamy Draw Park followed by a Q & A session followed by an autograph session and showing of the documentary Indulgence back at the store. I could not believe it at first but after realizing that Tony was in fact actually making the trip out to this barren wasteland I was psyched to say the least. In the short time of following the sport and lifestyle of Ultramarathon running I have found most of those involved to be very honest, humble, down to earth folks who for the most part have a very simplistic attitude towards not only running but also to life in general and I think no one exemplifies this more through their actions than Tony. So I was really looking forward to getting to lace 'em up and hit the trails with a huge inspiration of mine.
The first thing that struck me about Tony was his humility. He comes across so honestly in both his calculations of himself as well as the world around him and it seems as though he does it so effortlessly. I found myself more taken in by his thoughts on things outside of the running world than I did with the trivialities of running. But, moving forward we all hit the trails and I soon found myself staring at the back of his singlet which quickly started getting smaller and smaller as the run kicked into high gear. The trail was nice, kind of your classic valley desert trail with some smooth sections and also some more rugged technical strips. All in all it was a decent trail and a beautiful morning for a run. Tony for the most part kept it at a decent pace and at the tail end of the run even stepped off and waited for our group which was about 30 seconds behind the lead group to catch up and then continued on to the trailhead parking lot.
It was surreal getting out there with Tony and sharing with him the mountains that we have here in Phoenix. I cant than him enough for coming out and sharing his time with us, it was a trip. Great day, great run, great guy! Thanks New Balance!

A Goal In Focus
Distance: 4.6 m
Time: 43m
Location: Treadmill
Total Miles: 142.5 m
Total Time: 22:21
I think I can honestly say that I now can focus a bit more of my time but more importantly a bit more of my energy and passion on the trails and roads of the world and this makes me a very happy person. I am going to try to not only try and update my daily(hopefully)runs more often but also I am going to make a concentrated effort to connect with my overall experiences that I find and put them to ink or type.
My first rule of business will be in getting ready for a 50k run which I hope to accomplish within the next 4 months. In pursuing this I should get my fair share of miles and hopefully vertical miles at that, and I should have the opportunity to indulge in the many benefits of the acts of motion.

Total Miles: 120.9 m
Total Time: 19:06
I decided to test my legs and head over to a nice hidden little gem on the north side of the 60 freeway in Apache Junction because I knew it would be a little closer than South Mountain and I had prior commitments later that night so I just wanted to get in a little vertical running and that is exactly what I got. I came to find that Silly Mountain is actually a nice little trail system that wraps in and around the mountain with alot of singletrack as well as some more technical climbs and drops and your average flat trails. It was a beautiful run with multiple trails/options to choose from. That combined with the ideal weather made for a nice, simple little run that left me wanting more. I will be back there soon.

To make a long story short, the last month has been a whirlwind with my wedding and the leadup to that, as well as my honeymoon in Bermuda followed by a trip to Palm Springs for 3 days. I can now say that I am of clear mind and can confidently concentrate on my running for the first time in quite some time. I am very refreshed and very excited to be able to hit the trails again healthy, happy and motivated. I am looking forward to getting a good time, for me atleast, in the Cave Creek Trail Run on April 23rd. Till then, happy trails.

Today was the 10th anniversary of the Lost Dutchman Marathon in Apache Junction, however I was to be taking part in the 8k trail run just as I had done last year in my very first trail run. I knew heading into the race that the weather may not be ideal considering it had rained profusely over the last 48 hours leading up to the race, but I figured that the only way that the 8k would be switched from trail to road would be if there was some serious rain falling and accumulating on the course, after all this is a trail race or off road race so conditions should never be ideal, right? Well, after little sleep and a sore throat tingling in my throat I headed out to the course in the early dawn, winding down the lightless streets of the northeast valley. I didnt feel particularly psyched about the energy levels in my body and felt as if I would need to really dig deep to find the sub seven minute pace I was hoping for. After the long walk to the starting gates from the parking lot I was astounded to hear over the loud speaker that the 8k trail run had been canceled and it would indeed be a 8k road race that would start with the 10k racers at 8am instead of 7:45am and follow the same 10k route except the 8k'ers would turn around a little shy of the 10k turn around and head back. After mentally preparing for a trail run including strapping on my minimalist MT101 trail shoes, I was surely deflated to hear that I would now be running a road race on the surface that I despise. I also was not keen on the fact that I would be out with nearly 3 times the runners as I had figured for prior. It was just not my day. The run began with a quick start, a little too quick as I had figured on starting around 7:20 pace yet here I was running sub 6:30 for the first half mile. What I didnt anticipate was a little bit of an incline for the first mile or so of the race which took a little out of my sails but I pushed through and found myself settle in for a bit but then came the first of 4 pit stops to re-tie my shoes. I knew early in the race that I could not avoid the loose lace for the next 3.5 miles so I had to pull over. This was a recurring theme. It became quite clear pretty early that I just didnt have the desire to run a fast 5 miles on the road this day and at about the 2 mile mark, just after the second pit stop for a re-tie, I kinda resorted to a customary 9:00 pace jog which continued for over a mile it seemed. After making the turn at the 2.5 mile mark I became a little motivated at the fact that I knew the race photographer was coming up so I tried to put on my best race face, ya know upright, perfect form, maybe a little flexing of the biceps......okay maybe not. The adrenaline kicked in at this point and I made it my goal to finish strong if possible and that I did. I ran the last mile in sub 7 pace to a 38:05 timing. Looking back on the run I realize that with a little luck with my laces and a more well prepared mental outlook I could of easily got a sub 7 pace throughout the race. I am happy with the fight I put in at the close of the race so there is some positives to take from the day. Another day/race awaits.

5k PR!
Distance: 3.1 m
Time: 20:41
Location: Treadmill
Total Miles: 99.5 m
Total Time: 15:49
What was to be a 3 miler with a sub 21 minute time as a goal turned out to be a new PR in the 5k. I went in with a good game plan of running the first mile in the high seven's and work my way up every fifth of a mile from there. I realized at about the 2.5 mile mark that I had a shot at my PR if I was willing to push myself through the last half mile or so. I went with it and found myself running at 11.3 mph for the final quarter mile to finish out in a 20:41 effort, carving off 6 seconds from my previous mark. This is good news going into my 8k on the weekend. Fingers are crossed.

Running the mountain was more than I had bargained for on this sunday afternoon. I went awry with deciding to drink a Muscle Milk for my morning energy and then wash that down with some diluted orange juice and then hit the road to the west. By the time I hit the trail, or about 1 mile into the run, my stomach started acting up like I had never felt before. It was a painful feeling almost and I knew something was wrong. After making a pitstop and watering and fertilizing the bushes I felt better and continued on for my 8 mile jog, down from the 13 I had originally been working towards. The run was very sub-par and I made it back in a paltry 1:15 mins. I had hoped for a sub 7 minute 4 miles out to the water tanks and then I figured I would take it easy at about 9 minute pace coming back. Not happening. Maybe wednesday, we will see.

Uno mas dos mile sprint....
Distance: 2.0 m
Time: 12:50
Location: Treadmill
Total Miles: 88.4 m
Total Time: 14:13
Ok, if I am truly going to try and push it for a shorter sprint such as a 2 miler and really try and break a personal best I really need to leave my beloved MT101's in the closet. I realized that I just dont have enough support in those to take the pounding of sub 6:30 miles. So from here out I will save those for the beauty of the dirt and rock surfaces of the planets attainable land. I am happy to tell you though that I eclipsed my mediocre 13:02 PR in the 2 mile and put in a decent, for my standards-which are going up I might add, 12:50. The second mile was clocked I belive in around 6:15 or so which was nice. Out.

Shirtless South Mtn. Run in 42 Degree Weather
Distance: 8.1 m
Time: 1:20
Location: South Mountain Park/Desert Classic Trail
Total Miles: 82.3 m
Total Time: 13:32
I decided to brave one of the coldest days in the state this year and go for a long vertically challenged run off of one of the steepest canyon trails at the mountain this afternoon. It was steep, it was jagged, and it was beautiful. It is so relieving to find a new trail that challenges my body and mind. Its shocking to not know what is coming around the next corner, and exciting. After dropping down into the steep abyss off of the main roadway(Summit Road)it is pretty much a straight drop of about 500 feet over about 8 tenths of a mile. It then flattens into a open trail that hugs the adjacent neighborhood for a few miles before climbing up and away and harpoons east like a bullet. I felt good and also found a great rhythm which I firmly believe was because I could not get a lot of feeling in my limbs because of the cold weather. I was able to push and finally sprint up outta the canyon at under ten minute pace which made for a personal victory. Love it. Off to Vegas. Red Rocks?

Cough Syrup Run/3.1 miles
Distance: 3.1 m
Time: 29:00
Location: Mesa Canals and streets
Total Miles: 74.2 m
Total Time: 12:12
Decided to keep up with the green initiative and run to the neighborhood Target for some cough syrup for Michelle whom was feeling under the weather and it ended up being a nice little night jog that worked out some of the junk I had eaten earlier in the day. Legs felt good, kept the heart down. Good day. For the month my numbers are a little low but not too bad. I will admit that I have been a very busy bee this month with the wedding and some other days that were just unrunable unfortunately. But as I see it I believe that this coming month should see an increase in mileage as well as a couple of exotic runs sprinkled in throughout the month. Exciting.

South Mountain Park-National and Mormon Loop Trail
Distance: 6.0 m

Location: South Mountain Park- National and Mormon Loop Trails
Total Miles: 71.1 m
Total Time: 11:43
What was to be a 2 hour excursion in the mountains in Phoenix today turned into an 8 hour life and death struggle in the wind-swept peaks of central Arizona.........ok, it was not that dramatic but let me give you a quick recap of the days events. After picking up my buddy Aaron and heading out for a nice 6 mile run in the park this morning I went through my regular double checking of the pockets as we exited the truck to make sure I had taken my truck key off of my key ring, and upon further inspection I found it right there in my pocket......good job Logan! We started off down and up the trailhead weaving through the canyon walls, echoing our heartbeats off the stone cliffs until we made the turn around to head back atop Mormon Loop Trail just north of Two Peaks. The run was ok but I did feel a little bit of pain afterwards in my left foot which I believe I may have tweaked while stepping on a sharp rock awkwardly early in the run. Other than that it was simply an average run, albeit a little sluggish as all early morning runs usually are for me without a warmup. Aaron was a good sport considering this was his first taste of any kind of a run with some serious uphill work in it, and he impressed me with the fact that he pushed through to the end with a decent pace. But then the floor caved in. After running out the last few hundredths of a mile in the parking lot to round out the 6 mile run I fingered through my pockets and pulled out my 2007 Toyota Scion key. "Hmmm" I thought for a moment. I knew something was not right. I then realized that I did not drive the Toyota today, I drove the Ford F-150 today. So, to make a long, long story and day short, after using "Queen Bee's" phone to make a phone call in the one spot on the mountain that got reception I got ahold of my buddy Rob whom in turn called 5 locksmith's whom in turn said they either could not find our truck atop Buena Vista Lookout or they did not service that area of the country, ie the middle of nowhere where noone should be let alone running. After 3 hours of sitting, sleeping, urinating and conversing about the state of unicycles in today's pop-culture, a nice, fresh-faced 25year old Israeli Surfer(not Argentinian Logan, geez) fresh from New Zealand showed up drove us up the 8 mile deserted highway, past the towers which he said give off, "radiation", and in one fell swoop with his nifty inflatable balloon contraption, was successful in breaking into our truck, thus enabling us to drink our scalding hot G2 Gatorade which lay exposed on the seat. After a hefty tip to the youngster and couple of well wishes we descended the mountain top which we had come to know like a twin brother and stumbled back into the civilized world which waited down below. Another days work.

This time of year in Arizona to me feels like 'we' as Arizonans should be greatly indebted to those living in the remaining snowed-out states in the union. So, of course I took advantage of not only the weather but also the fact that I have felt particularly healthy and drawn to South Mountain over the last 7-10 days with great energy. I think I am finally starting to notice a jump in my efficiency on my mountain runs up the trails at the park and this has translated well with my mind, and has given me a added vigor to hit the harder, steeper inclines at the mountain. I think that time is of no importance to me on these runs now just pace and incline, that is all for the time being. I have noticed in particular that I seem to be recovering from the big climbs within my runs a little quicker now which is in turn giving me the motivation to run out a little longer on these daily runs than I am used to. My run this morning was met with a little adversity when I realized that the REI company had a sponsored hike throughout the trails this morning drawing in well over a few hundred hikers from what I could see. Huge portions of these trails are narrow singletrack with granite framing the sidewalls so this leaves me with little wiggle room to get around the multiple groups I encountered. I dealt with it though and got through with enough energy when I hit Buena Vista Lookout that I proceeded for the first time past the lookout and tried to find the spot where National Trail re-connects and continues on to the west end of the park. After avoiding multiple hikers along the paved road for another few hundred meters in search of the mystic National Trail Head, I took a wrong turn down Corona Canyon Trail. When I realized I had taken a wrong turn I made the decision to see where the un-trekked path may lead. It lead down, straight down! With tons of energy still filling my legs and lungs I let the canyon swallow me and spit me out in a deserted wash at the bottom of the decent. It was calm, quiet, almost like no one had ever stepped in the space. I knew that I still had a huge hike to climb out of the canyon ahead of me so after a few minutes of taking in the scenery(untouched) and wishing an lone trailrunner a good morning I turned west and climbed my way out of the rocky earth. One hour and ten minutes later I was back in the lot loving life.....a little more.

Headed out to SMP for a 6 miler with Aaron a friend of mine. Early on it felt like it was gonna be a nice, energy filled run but I found myself somewhat run down after a few miles on the trail. It felt like I re-aggravated a soft bruised spot on the ball of my left foot which caused a little discomfort throughout the run but for the most part I really just wanted to get out and show the trail to Aaron who had never spent any time on a trail before. I feel like I may have caused a little extra stress throughout the run from holding back my pace but it is all good. Hope to post soon.

Decided to try and get some vertical running in at the MCC track by running the stairs which I did for a mile then finished it off with 2 miles of dirt/grass running around the campus. Overall it went well but I did get a little smoked on the stairs and it felt like a big relief to hit the grass and all its cushioning.

I was elated to find myself for the first time since the PF Chang's Marathon enjoying a runner's high of some sort. I set out this morning to do a make up run for calling out of the Xterra race that was to be held in the White Tank Mountains to the northwest of me, and what I ended up finding was one hell of a reserve in my running tank. I decided against going up and doing the National/Mormon loop run and instead headed out to the looping, winding Desert Classic Trail that outlines the southern boundary of the range, hugging Ahwatukee. It was an awesome run from the start, well save for the Jumping Cholla cactus that decided to jump on and be my pacer for the first 200 meters or so of my run. Other than that short nightmare I was able to enjoy a splendid day in the sun. I sauntered up and down the dirt track gliding past mountain bikers, hikers, and an occasional few other runners and pushed through a couple of tough spots to a personal best in both distance and overall time for the half marathon distance. I had never gone more than 12.6 miles on the trails and also I had never given a honest effort in a half marathon so this was definitely a huge success. I felt like I could of easily got under 2 hours and mentally I held up great. I cant wait for the next challenge awaiting me.

I went into my run tonight thinking that I was going to get a half mile into my run and find myself stepping off because of a lagging injury to my tibialis anterior muscle. But, much to my amazement, for the first time in a week and a half I had no discomfort in the muscle and actually was able to enjoy a pretty intense 3 mile incline run ending at a 5.0 incline. I was very satisfied and this gives me a lot of confidence heading into the run on sunday for sure. I am psyched.

Welcome 2011! Wow, I have never felt like I have more of a clean slate than I do now. So what do I do with it? I run!
Ok, so the first 3 runs of the new year have been mostly disheartening. I had some bad muscle tightness on day 1 at the gym which caused me to step off only 1.6 miles into my run, then I came out sluggish on a day at the track with stairs as an incline test and managed only 3 miles of work there. Finally, I made it out to the mountain only to find my right lower leg tightening up again causing alot of discomfort as well as cutting my running down to the point that I had to walk a significant portion of the loop until I worked out the stiffness and pain. So far my year has been shaky but I am looking forward to getting back on track and finally making the right decisions that will positively affect my running this year.

The last few weeks of running I can honestly say have been very fulfilling. I have had extraordinary amounts of energy with the only downside being that I have not been able to get to the trails on a few occasions that I really wanted to but other than that I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent on the dirt and I even was able to throw in a PR time in the mile on the treadmill that I was not expecting whatsoever. If my body holds up I can easily see myself getting in a lot better endurance shape by summer time to where I can maybe take part in a trail marathon? We will see.

As I arrived at the park a few nights back I could not help but notice that I felt alone, desolate, in the parking lot at Pima Canyon. I dont believe I had ever heard it that silent or felt the park that motionless. As I walked towards the trailhead I realized that with the fading sun I would have to be up and down by 5:45pm by my assessments. I was wrong as always because the sun actually set around 5:35, but whats new? Just prior to embarking I had set a unrealistic goal of netting 9 miles before sundown but after a few simple calculations as my shoes were put into motion I realized that I would have to run non stop with no picture, water, or rest breaks just to be down the mountain by 6pm. I scrapped those ridiculous yet highly ambitious plans for another day. Moving forward, literally, the run went ok. I did have a few spells of exhaustion along the run especially at the top of the big hill up on Mormon loop and those kept me in check and reminded me that I had been sick for the past week and had little energy as a result of this. But I made it through the loop in a decent time though I stopped probably a dozen times for snapshots and rest stops but it was worth it because the dusk lay silent and provided a perfect frame to my snaps from atop the mountain. A canary sunset watched me as I approached the parking lot and with a quick glance back I was able to catch it and film it before it fell behind the mountain, the city. Pics provided. Lovely day. Night.

Out for an easy jaunt around the complex in the mid 50 degree November weather. My babydoll decided to accompany me throughout and it was a delight for someone else to join in on the suffering for once. She actually wanted to run longer but she had snot running down her chin so I called it off after a easy mile and sat around the fireplace for some hot cocoa.......kidding. Got some pics to post.

Got out mid-morning for my loop out at South Mountain. I thought it would be a little cooler in the morning but it turned out to be a great day for running. The mountain was packed with patrons which caused a little headache in some portions but for the most part the run went ok. I felt a little tired in the legs, probably from a leg workout in the gym not long before, but was able to push through with little fatigue and simply just tried to stay at a reasonable pace. I did however nearly sprain my ankle on two different occasions. This is something I really need to pay attention to going forward because it only takes one time and that is it. I feel like I am in better cardio shape than I was earlier in the summer so from that aspect I am encouraged to continue to hit the mountain when I can. I will post pics in a jiffy, hold tight.

Ran for 5 and a half at South Mountain on the Mormon/Mormon Loop/National Trails at dusk and I have to say it was beautiful. The weather permitted short sleeve running and the lights flickering in the distance gave me the yearning to want to catch its glimpses from all sides so I jaunted up and down the canyons and basically did one big loop. I heard a pack of coyotes not far off the trail fighting over something atop the Mormon Loop trail. My ankles and quads, etc all held up and the run was finished right at sunset so I avoided the darkness falling on my exploits. I have to marvel at the weather this time of year in Arizona, its stunning. I really want to get out there more but the time constraints with marriage prep, etc has really put a hold on my running. I love this time of year. I promise to post pics soon. P.S. My MT101's are suiting me very well so far, thanks Anton.
